Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia therapy
What is intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia therapy?
Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia therapy involves breathing, at regular intervals, oxygen-depleted air and then oxygen-enriched air.
This stimulus (oxygen fluctuation) allows cellular mechanisms to be triggered, which will be beneficial for your brain and which will allow you to activate cognitive regeneration.
What does a typical session look like?
During the sessions, the patient simply has to remain seated and wear an oxygen mask. Next to him is a device that will generate 2 different airs:
- Oxygen-depleted air
- Oxygen-enriched air
Throughout the session, the patient will alternate between these two tunes.
This therapy is offered as a 2-month treatment, at a rate of one 35-minute session per day.
This therapy is painless, non-drug and non-invasive. It is possible to follow this therapy from home.
The effects of therapy on the brain
In recent years, several scientific studies have demonstrated the mechanisms activated by this therapy:
- Creation of new neurons ( source )
- Protection of existing neurons ( source )
- Reduction of inflammation ( source )
- Decrease in Amyloid Beta (found in high amounts in people with Alzheimer's disease) ( source , source )
- Effectively improves physical abilities, symptoms and quality of life in patients with long COVID ( source )
All of these benefits help to stimulate your neuroplasticity and will help restore your damaged brain functions.
What cognitive progress can be observed?
It takes about 20 days for the body to adapt to the oxygen fluctuations and initiate a cellular response. After this phase, regeneration begins , bringing cognitive improvements.
Many patients experience a reduction in cognitive fatigue, brain fog, and problems with concentration and short-term memory. Specific improvements depend on the aftereffects: for example, a patient with aphasia may improve diction and comprehension, while a patient with hemiplegia gains mobility and strength.
Finally, intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia therapy has been shown to benefit cognitive performance in older adults, whether or not they have mild impairment.

Severe head trauma with left spastic hemiplegia occurred in May 2023. (…) Having no more effect from the botulinum toxin injections, my hand began to stiffen and close again. However, after 4 weeks of therapy I was able to start to see the effects with my hand relaxing, my deep and superficial finger flexors gradually relaxed. After 2 months of therapy my hand is still relaxed. The spasticity having diminished I can now use it a little more on a daily basis. The therapy ended on September 25, 2024. Even if the spasticity is still present when using the arm, this therapy allows me to use it more on a daily basis and to chain my rehabilitation exercises without having to stretch my hand between each movement. It is really a relief on a daily basis. To summarize, the therapy allowed me to have a significant reduction in the spasticity in my hand and therefore to be able to use it more on a daily basis, such as holding a vegetable or a mixing bowl for cooking, but also to open doors and especially to do more rehabilitation exercises.

After my stroke in
2022, I stayed 8 months at the Châtaigneraie rehabilitation center, then 4 months in the day hospital at Coudray.I had many after-effects: hemiplegia on the left side that prevented me from walking alone, stiffness and total loss of sensation in my left arm, loss of peripheral vision on the left side of my left eye, slight facial paralysis on the left side, and difficulty moving around on my own (going up to the toilet or washing myself). After 2 months of hypoxic therapy at home, I made a lot of progress. My motor skills have improved, my left leg is supporting me again, I can move around on my own with a cane, I can lift the sole of my left foot towards me. I go upstairs alone to go to the toilet. My left arm is much less stiff, I can move it a little and I have regained sensation in my arm but not in my hand. I can feel it again when my wife pinches my arm. I can see to the left with my left eye again. My face no longer falls. Thank you very much.
